Abstract

Diplomski rad obrađuje američkog biskupa, filozofa i teologa, Fulton John Sheena, koji je
ujedno i poznati orator i televizijska ličnost. Obrađuje njegovo filozofsko mišljenje i njegov
personalizam i katolički nauk u problemima suvremenog doba, odnosno 20. stoljeća. Rad ima
poseban osvrt na tri odabrane tematike i društvene promjene o kojima je, osim bogatog opusa,
posvetio i televizijska predavanja koja su dostupnija i prilagođena širem krugu ljudi. Tematike i
društvene promjene koje se spominju u radu, a kojima se Sheen detaljno bavio su: komunizam,
društveni problemi sa naglaskom na siromaštvo, sekularizacija i pitanje Boga u društvu i
seksualna revolucija. Prvi dio rada odnosi se na Sheenov životopis i na opravdanje njegovog
statusa kao velikog filozofa 20. stoljeća koji spada u krug poznatih katoličkih personalista i
promicatelja ljudskih prava i dostojanstva osobe. To se pogotovo vidi u njegovoj raspravi o
komunizmu, gdje kritizira komunizam kao ideologiju i kao pokret sa posljedicama. Također je
bio poznat i po promicanju dostojanstva siromašnih u ne komunističkim sustavima. Drugi dio
rada odnosi se na kulturne promjene poput sekularizacije, gdje Sheen svojom filozofijom o Bogu
odgovara na takve ideje. Posljednju promjenu koju rad obrađuje je seksualnu revoluciju u
kontekstu materijalizacije osobe u postmodernom dobu na samom kraju 20. stoljeća. Rad je
obrađen kao jedna komparacija samih ideja i promjena i Sheenovog odgovora na navedene.

Abstract (english)

The thesis deals with the American bishop, philosopher and theologian who is a famous orator
and television personality, Fulton John Sheen. It deals with his philosophical opinion and his
personalism and Catholic teaching in the problems of the contemporary era, that is, of the 20th
century. The work has a special focus on three selected topics and social changes, which, in
addition to his rich opus, he also dedicated televised lectures that are more accessible and
adapted to a wider range of people. The topics and social changes mentioned in the work, which
Sheen dealt with in detail, are: communism, social problems with an emphasis on poverty,
secularisation and the question of God in society, and the sexual revolution. The first part of the
paper refers to Sheen's biography and the justification of his status as a great philosopher of the
20th century who belongs to the circle of well-known Catholic personalists and promoters of
human rights and the dignity of the person. This is especially evident in his discussion of
communism, where he criticizes communism as an ideology and as a movement with
consequences. He was also known for promoting the dignity of the poor in non-communist
systems. The second part of the work refers to cultural changes such as secularization, where
Sheen responds to such ideas with his philosophy about God. The last change that the paper
deals with is the sexual revolution in the context of the materialization of the person in the
postmodern age at the very end of the 20th century. The paper is processed as a comparison of
the ideas and changes themselves and Sheen's response to the aforementioned.
